Gina Young Holds Three-Day Feminist Acting Class

EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.

From Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18, Gina Young welcomes all women for her three-day feminist acting class, hosted by the Women's Center for Creative Work.

Feminist Acting Class is a series of experiments to determine if the formof an acting class can be made feminist, in addition to the content. Part art project, part intellectual experiment and part dynamic physical practice, Feminist Acting Class wants to expand the roles for women, transgenderand nonbinary people in theatre and the way that we approach these roles.

What happens when we take on traditionallymale roles? Can we perform sexist material in such a way that it becomes feminist? Can we approach our acting practice in ways that resist sexist expectations of female performers?

The workshop will include physical work and scene study, exploringways to read against a text. Participants willleavewith an expandedknowledge of women playwrights, a stronger sense of self-actualization and ideas forapproachingself-care in a profession full of rejection.

This workshop is intended for actors who audition and perform regularly, butallare welcome regardless of experience.

Gina Young is a queer feminist playwright, director, musician and actor whose work has been seen all over the US and Europe. Her most recent work"sSISTERSs,"which will be presented at USC's Visions & Voices series in 2017,wasdeveloped through the Studio Series at REDCAT and was a finalist for the Beatrice Terry Residency at the Drama League in NYC.

Her other plays include "Femmes: A Tragedy," which receivedthe Jane Chambers Award for Playwriting, and "Tales of a Fourth Grade Lesbo." Gina studied Drama at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. She started her theatre practice as a member of the legendary WOW Cafe Theatre collective.
