ABC Releases Trailer for Christian-Protested Dan Savage Sitcom

Despite the best efforts of conservative Christian organizations and the anti-gay hate group Family Research Council (FRC), ABC has announced that it is picking up "The Real O'Neals," the Dan Savage-inspired comedy about a Catholic family whose gay teenage son comes out.

Motivated by animus against Savage, FRC, One Million Moms (OMM), and the conservative Media Research Center (MRC), who had their members sign petitions, made 4,000 phone calls and send 21,000 postcards protesting the sitcom and demanding that ABC dump the project altogether, Mediaite reports.

According to Deadline , "The Real O'Neals" is "a contemporary take on a seemingly perfect Catholic family, whose lives take an unexpected turn when surprising truths are revealed. Instead of ruining their family, the honesty triggers a new, messier chapter where everyone stops pretending to be perfect and actually starts being real."

"Where is the market demand for this? You might even resign yourself that this is the way that it is," said MRC head Brent Bozell in a letter to ABC where both he and FRC's Tony Perkins claimed to take more issue with the man who inspired the program and less of a problem with the gay subject matter in the comedy.

"They're choosing him (Savage) for his signature, which is religious bigotry and personal offensiveness, not because he's gay," Bozell said in the letter. "There are a thousand and one gay people they could have chosen."

In an action alert asking their followers to put pressure on ABC to pull the plug on the sitcom, One Million Moms called Savage "one of the cruelest, most vile political activists in America" who spews "hatred against people of faith."

ABC has ignored these protests and plans to air the series as part of its new line up.
