Ex-Gay Calls on HRC to Pay for Co-Founder's Conversion Therapy

If ever there was a prime example of a quack therapist ambulance chasing, this would be it.

In the wake of the news of the arrest of Human Rights Campaign (HRC) co-founder Terry Bean on sex abuse charges involving a 15-year-old boy, ex-gay activist and reparative therapist Christopher Doyle is calling on the nation's largest LGBT civil rights organization to fund conversion therapy to "cure" Bean.

In a statement released by ex-gay advocacy group Voice of the Voiceless (VoV) Barb Wire, Doyle, who is the head, is demanding that HRC donate "a considerable amount" of money to fund reparative therapy for Bean and his alleged victim.

"It is outrageous and tragic that the Founder of the largest gay activist organization in the world is molesting boys, while at the same time their leadership is pushing for laws across the United States to keep those same boys out of the counseling office to heal trauma at the hands of homosexual pedophiles," Doyle said. "In light of these serious allegations, we are calling on HRC to donate a considerable amount of funding in their 2015 budget to fund Reparative Therapy (or whatever preferred SOCE (sexual orientation change effort) therapy of their choosing) for their pedophile Founder, and his victim. VoV will work with HRC to locate appropriate, highly qualified licensed counselors that are trained in advanced therapeutic techniques to heal trauma for the victim."

Doyle may be looking to line his own pockets with HRC money. In addition to being head of VoV, he is also director of the gay conversion therapy group International Healing Foundation, which he founded with disgraced therapist Richard Cohen, MA. In 2002 Cohen was permanently expelled from the American Counseling Association (ACA), after it accused him of six violations of its ethics code.

According to Truth Wins Out, some of Cohen's more unorthodox "therapeutic practices" have involved beating pillows with tennis rackets in order to heal anger toward one's mother, followed by sessions where he cuddles his male patients in order to recreate a father's love.

In the end, if history repeats itself, unless hell freezes over and HRC ponies up the money for Doyle's debunked therapy, he may have to end up writing himself a check. In 2013, in the wake of noted ex-gay therapy organization Exodus International's closing, Doyle demanded an apology from the organization. In the absence of his requested apology from Exodus, he ended up writing one from them himself.

On Wednesday, detectives from the Portland police Sex Crimes Unit arrested 66-year-old millionaire real estate mogul Terrence Bean on two counts of third-degree sodomy, a felony, and one count of third-degree sex abuse, a misdemeanor. His alleged victim was a 15-year-old boy.
