Seven months have passed since the 2nd Mass has arrived at their destination. They finally reached Charleston and have settled in. Tom has been elected president of this remnant of surviving human civilization.

Along with continuing efforts to locate other survivors, Tom has negotiated an uneasy alliance with a new alien race -- their lead representative Cochise is promising to help the humans win the war -- while debating the allegiance of a sect of rebel "Skitters" that are fighting alongside the humans and providing some very important intel. Amid the threat of a spy in their midst, the arrival of yet more alien military forces and his expecting wife Anne's baby, Tom learns early on that their allies, the Volm, are sending for reinforcements -- but whose side are they on?

If that's not enough, a new threat moves dangerously close to home when Karen (an early casualty of the alien's incursion) emerges as the new "Overlord" of the alien invaders.
