Lawyers to Grill Sociologist in Gay-Marriage Trial

A University of Texas professor will face a vigorous cross-examination in the trial over Michigan's gay-marriage ban.

Mark Regnerus is returning to the witness chair Tuesday in Detroit federal court. He testified Monday for the state of Michigan, which is defending a 2004 constitutional amendment that recognizes marriage only as between a man and a woman.

Regnerus is the author of a study that found young adults had problems years later if their mom or dad had a same-sex relationship when they were kids. He stands by the results but acknowledges there's been some legitimate criticism.

Two Detroit-area nurses are asking a judge to throw out Michigan's gay-marriage ban, saying it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
