Comedian Judy Gold has joined the cast of "Disaster!," the critically acclaimed 1970s disaster movie musical written by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick, playing Off-Broadway at the St. Luke's Theatre in New York. Gold takes over the role of Shirley from Annie Golden of the hit Netflix show "Orange is the New Black."

When it comes to comedy, Gold is no ingenue; she has plenty of experience under her belt as a successful stand-up artist, and has staged her one-woman shows "25 Questions for a Jewish Mother" and "The Judy Show -- My Life as a Sitcom." She even starred on the TV reality series "Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-off." But playing as part of an ensemble is something that she relishes.

"Well, for one, it's not a one-person show, so it's a lot less pressure," said Gold. "And it is really a treat for me to be part of an ensemble. The actors are so talented and it's a wonderful experience on so many levels. I love every song in the show, and the best part is that it is hilarious!!"

Gold said that she studied music in college and was in the orchestra, adding that she really missed being part of an ensemble, and this reminds her of those times. She loves the experience, especially the music.

"It's going great," she said. "It's like you're driving your car, and it's 1979 and you just keep changing the radio stations. I adore every single song in the show!"

The show has moved from "Golden" to "Gold," as Annie Golden has resumed with the taping of the hit Netflix show "Orange is the New Black" in anticipation of a summer release. Gold said she was perfectly happy to step into the role, admitting that she was a fan of the series.

"Of course I watch the show!! Love it! Cannot wait for the new episodes!," said Gold.

Also joining the cast are David Hibbard in the row of casino owner Tony Delvecchio, and Max Crumm, who starred in and won the reality television series "Grease: You're the One That I Want!" and subsequently starred in the Broadway revival as Danny Zuko. Crumm takes over the role of Scott, replacing original cast member Robb Sapp. Gold said she was happy to be working with such a stand-up cast and crew.

"I hope this show runs forever and that I make life-long friends. The cast is truly amazing," said Gold, adding that she hoped it was just the start of a long love affair with Broadway.

"Disaster!" enjoys an open-ended run at St. Luke's Theatre, 308 W. 46th St. For information or tickets, call 212-947-3499 or visit http://www.disastermusical.com/tickets/
