Man Accused of Fatally Stabbing Transgender Woman Held Without Bond

The man accused of fatally stabbing 23-year-old transgender woman Deoni Jones, also known as JaParker and Logan, will remain in jail, held without bond, as he awaits trial on a charge of second-degree murder while armed, a D.C. Superior Court judge decided June 22.

Gary Niles Montgomery, 55, of Northeast Washington, appeared in court for a felony status hearing before Judge Robert Morin that Friday. The case against Montgomery was continued for a further felony status conference, scheduled for Aug. 31. Montgomery, who had undergone mental observation hearings since his arrest, was judged competent to stand trial March 23.

Montgomery was arrested Feb. 11 after a weeklong manhunt during which the Metropolitan Police Department posted video footage of the suspect on YouTube.

Jones was stabbed in the face on the evening of Feb. 2 while waiting at a bus stop at the intersection of East Capitol Street and Sycamore Road NE, in the city's Benning Heights neighborhood. She was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, Md., where she died in the early morning hours of Feb. 3.
