Watch the Magnetic Fields' New Video for 'Andrew in Drag'
Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Even though the indie pop Boston band the Magnetic Fields released their debut album over two decades ago, their new music still sounds clever and catchy than ever. Their latest single "Andrew in Drag" from their tenth studio album, "Love at the Bottom of the Sea," recently received a gender-bending (semi-NSFW) music video.
Directed by Scott Valins, the video shows the intimate moments of a man and woman dressing in and out of drag. The man is shaving his chest, slipping into nylons and "stuffing", while the woman is taping her breasts down, putting on a fake mustache and combing her hair down.
Although the song clocks in just under 2 minutes and 20 seconds, it doesn't stop openly gay bandleader Stephin Merritt triumphantly singing the track's catchy hooks in his signature bass voice.
"A pity she does not exist, a shame he's not a fag/ The only girl I ever loved was Andrew in drag," Merritt chants while the video's characters apply makeup.
The Magnetic Fields' will drop "Love at the Bottom of the Sea" on March 6. The LP follows up their 2010 release "Realism." The band is perhaps best known for their 1999 three-volume concept album "69 Love Songs," which was conceived by Merritt while he was visiting a gay piano bar in Manhattan.
