Former Berlin Jewish Girls School to Open as Culinary Arts Center

BERLIN, Germany - On the 9th February 2012, the listed building of the former Jewish girls' school in Auguststrasse in Berlin will open as a space for art and cuisine. Initiator Michael Fuchs brings together art and gastronomy at the location within the triangle between the Museumsinsel, the Kunstwerke and the gallery district in Berlin Mitte. Following a year of construction, the house is now to be opened to the public.
The former classrooms and corridors will present changing exhibitions by different actors from the art world. Camera Work, a photo gallery already based in the Kantstrasse in Berlin Charlottenburg, has opened the Camera Work Contemporary Gallery on the first floor, and will show works by Robert Polidori upon opening.
Michael Fuchs' gallery will exhibit works in the former assembly hall on the 3rd floor. He shares the floor with gallery owner Gerd Harry Lybke, who will open a second site, the EIGEN + ART Lab, as an exhibition format for international artists, accompanied by a publication.
In the former gymnasium of the J�dische M�dchenschule, Jessica Paul, Stephan Landwehr and Boris Radczun of the Grill Royal will open the restaurant Pauly-Saal. Under the leadership of chef Siegfried Danler, the new restaurant offers guests regional and seasonal German cuisine in a magnificent setting during the day and in the evenings.
The restaurant is adjoined to the Pauly-Bar, which serves selected drinks. In the private dining rooms of The Cosher Classroom, Michael Zehden offers guests certified kosher cuisine, including a traditional Sabbath dinner on Fridays. At their deli Mogg & Melzer Delicatessen, Oskar Melzer and Paul Mogg offer homemade pastrami and other meats specialties, as well as products from the Pauly-Saal and The Kosher Classroom - to eat in or to take away. In favorable weather, the garden in the former schoolyard is an inviting place to eat and relax.
The historic building has been leased for 30 years and is part of the complex belonging to the Jewish Community in Berlin, which extends to the synagogue on Oranienburgerstrasse. Following detailed and historically suitable restoration by Gr�ntuch Ernst Architects, the building's 3,300 square meters of usable space will again be made available to the public after years of vacancy.

Long-term New Yorkers, Mark and Robert have also lived in San Francisco, Boston, Provincetown, D.C., Miami Beach and the south of France.
